We welcome applicants studying as part of an EU Lifelong Learning Programme (ERASMUS +) or funded by another institution for internships starting from February 2015.

Social Platform is looking for interns to assist in the implementation of our 2015 work programme. Accordingly, depending on his/her background and interests, the intern would work on one of the following activities/areas together with staff members:

  • Our bi-annual Networking Visits and Conferences to upcoming presidencies of the Council of the EU
  • Our EU-wide campaign to defend solidarity, calling for a revision of EU law to exempt humanitarian assistance to undocumented migrants from criminalisation
  • Our advocacy activities on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) and the Trade in Services Agreement (TiSA)
  • Analyse the implications of the 2014 Investment Plan and the new Investment Fund for the social field
  • Support the development of a common position on European ‘social standards’

Internship - Climate and Governance Programme

Climate and Governance Programme: Our research covers varied aspects of energy and climate policy, focussing on inter alia: evaluating investment in energy efficiency; informing the current debate on EU 2030 energy and climate policy targets, including through guidance for effective governance of Member States’ action on climate change mitigation and energy market integration; and assessing the environmental impact of renewable energy sources. This internship position would be of particular interest to those with some experience of energy and climate policy. However, it would be suitable for anyone with a wider knowledge of environmental policy in relation to energy and climate or a strong interest in developing their understanding in this area.

Internship Description

The successful candidate would support the work carried out by the two programmes - Climate and Governance Programme and Environmental Economics Programme - and related activities of other teams, where appropriate. Specifically, the work will involve contributions to projects on:

Climate and Governance: evaluating investment in energy efficiency and tenders related to environmental governance, including climate and energy policy.

Environmental Economics: literature review on health and social benefits of nature, and costs of action and inaction on dealing with marine litter.

The successful candidate should expect to work as part of the teams, which will involve:

  • Undertaking literature reviews, data collection and preliminary analysis;
  • Contributing to, and editing, research reports and potentially papers for publication;
  • Contributing to the production of articles, newsletters and policy papers;
  • Contributing to other organisational and administrative tasks as appropriate;
  • Helping to organise workshops and trainings as appropriate.

Person Specification

Interested applicants must:

  • hold a good first degree in at least one relevant subject or have otherwise proven knowledge in the field;
  • have a demonstrated interest in climate and energy policy and wish to pursue a careerin these areas;
  • have demonstrated good communication skills, in particular, good written and spoken English and the ability to present technical information in a clear and accessible manner;
  • have a proven record of showing initiative and being flexible with regard to the tasks they are asked to complete;
  • be capable of working independently in a fast-paced small office environment;
  • have good organisational and time management skills;
  • be reliable and capable of paying close attention to detail; and
  • have good computer skills (particularly in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and good command of the internet).

Proficiency in another European language is an advantage, however fluent English is essential. Candidates should either be EU citizens or have suitable visa already in place that allows an internship in Belgium.

Communication Intern

ENPA is looking for a native English-speaking intern to provide communications support at the association’s offices in Brussels from March/April 2015 for up to 6 months to help our communications output and with the organisation of forthcoming events. A small allowance for transport and food will be paid. A part-time position of several days a week is possible, if the candidate is currently undertaking studies.

Tasks:

  • Support effective communication strategies and activities;
  • Contribute to work on forthcoming ENPA publications and surveys;
  • Help with the organisation’s electronic newsletter for members.
  • Updating the organisation’s website and social media feeds;
  • Help with preparing and distributing press releases;
  • Contribute to ENPA’s organisational work, such as helping to prepare meetings and manage events;
  • Assist ENPA advisors with research to support lobbying priorities.

Qualifications:

  • Candidate should be a native English speaker with very good written and verbal communication skills;
  • The person should have a background in communications/ media studies/market research and have a strong interest be in EU media policies;

The International Justice (“IJ”) Program of Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) advises and operationalizes HRW’s activities on a range of issues relating to accountability in international criminal fora, devises strategies to obtain justice, and produces written materials to implement those strategies.

The IJ Program intern will primarily focus on monitoring international criminal law developments in targeted country situations and carrying out research on issues of international justice. Ideally, the intern would start mid-July and commit a minimum of three months, although six months is preferable.

This internship is unpaid. Some lunch and local travel costs may be reimbursed as pre-approved by HRW and in accordance with HRW policy. Students are often able to arrange academic credit, as HRW internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by the HRW staff, interaction with other international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials, and opportunities to attend lectures, trainings and special events relating to human rights. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.

Qualifications:

This internship is open to law students, law graduates, and graduate and undergraduate students with expertise in international criminal law. Applicants should be well-organized, self-motivated, and reliable with a strong proven interest in international human rights and/or international criminal law. Knowledge of universal jurisdiction is desirable. Strong writing skills, knowledge of French, and excellent English are essential.
